Admission of Pupils to Birchfield Community Primary School
There are two types of admissions to Birchfield Primary School: First place and in year. Please choose from the options below to find out more informaiton. Birchfiled Primary School is a community school, and therefore the admission arrangements are set by Somerset Local Authority. Please click below for further information on the admission arrangements.
First Place
This is where parents select their child’s first school at 4 or 5. Parents need to apply by January of the year that their child should start school. Applications are submitted online.
Birchfield Primary is a Local Authority managed mainstream school, therefore the LA will deal directly with all first place admissions to Birchfield and manage the waiting list during the first term.
We hold open days in the autumn term (prior to the September when your child is due to start) and these dates are published on our website and sent to local nurseries and playgroups. This gives parents the opportunity to visit the school and ask questions prior to making their school selection.
In year
This is where parents move children from one school to another during the school year, perhaps due to moving house. Application forms for an ‘In Year’ place can be obtained from the school or via the link below.
Once the forms are returned and processed, the school admission officer will check to see if a place is available and contact you. If there are no places at that time, the application is passed to the Local Authority, who then process the next stage and will inform you of your options.
If an application has been refused in any year group, your child will be placed on a waiting list. This will be kept strictly in order of oversubscription criteria by the Local Authority, as the Admission Authority, and the child will remain on the waiting list until the end of the academic year. Parents are responsible for informing the Admission Authority of any changes in their circumstances which could affect their place on the waiting list.
Places can only be reserved for 6 weeks or half a term in advance unless applicaitons are received under special circumstances.
